Five Ways To Stop Judging Yourself + FREE Journaling Prompts

“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we’ll ever do.” - Brené Brown

5 Ways To Stop Judging Yourself
  1. Be kinder to yourself instead of beating yourself up

From the time you wake up until the time you go to bed, how many times do you speak badly to yourself? You may not realize how much you speak down to yourself subconsciously (i.e. I’m so ugly, I look so fat, I’m so stupid, I’m such an idiot, etc.). We are constantly being our own worst enemy and we need to start switching our mindset around to being our own best friend because we all deserve that. Keep track of how often you are saying these self-defeating thoughts and replace them with kinder affirmations you can tell yourself to not only stop judging yourself but see a boost in your self esteem!

2. Stop caring what other people think

Sadly, we live in a world where the majority of what we do is not only judged by others but highly criticized by others; leading us to make decisions based upon what other people want and not necessarily what we want for ourselves. This is incredibly limiting your power and your freedom and you need to step out of this or you will continue being stuck. I want you to truly think about why you care so much about what other people think because at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter. All that matters is your happiness and your health.

3. Stop talking negatively about yourself to other people

Just like I mentioned above, the same thing rings true here. Whether you are saying it in your head or aloud, your brain recognizes it just the same. But once you put it out into the world into other people’s hands, you are putting those words into their power. We are inclined to constantly compare ourselves to other people especially within the digital era and social media. We need to come back down to Earth and realize that our chapter 2 isn’t going to be the same as someone elses chapter 10 and that we can be as successful as anyone else if we put in the dedication and hard work. We all just need to stop focusing on everyone else and focus on ourselves.

“Comparison is the thief of joy” - Theodore Roosevelt

4. Stop judging others

In order to stop judging yourself, you must stop judging others. One goes with the other, as it is like a domino effect. Why do you care so much about what others are thinking, doing, wearing, etc.? Odds are if you are judging someone by how they look or dress, you have issues with your body and how you dress. Let others express themselves the way they want as long as they aren’t doing any harm. What effect does it have on your life? Honestly? Does it really matter in retrospect? Really try to figure out where your judgements are coming from to get to the root to start figuring out how you can fix the cause of these thoughts and work on ways to stop judging yourself.

5. Accept what is happening

Life isn’t easy. I’ve been there, through hell and back multiple times. During the ups, relish in the gratitude and find what brings you joy and pursue that to its fullest. Make sure you are taking care of yourself first and foremost. During the downs, it is important to not judge yourself. Be sad, be upset, be angry. Get your emotions out. But don’t hate yourself, don’t be mean to yourself or your body. That’s when your mind, body, and soul need you the most. So, find ways to nourish them in a way that is fitting during that time.

No one is perfect, perfect doesn’t exist. But you need to own your story, you need to own your unique identity and be okay with the ups and downs of life. Just because you are having a hard day doesn’t make you inadequate. Just because you don’t understand a question doesn’t make you stupid. Just because you can’t fit into a certain pair of jeans does not make you fat. Just because you are dealing with a chronic illness does not make you irrelevant to society. It just means that you don’t fit into the perfect one size fits all approach that society has been grilling into our heads for generations. It means that you have a chance to overcome something and from that will come knowledge, from knowledge a lesson, from said lesson gratitude, and from gratitude peace.

How Fountain Pens Can Teach Us the Art of Mindfulness + ASMR Video

A few simple tips for life: feet on the ground, head to the skies, heart open…quiet mind.

Rasheed Ogunlaru

There is something magical about opening a journal and writing with a new pen and ink; especially a fountain pen. Although it may be easier to use any old plastic pen, fountain pens can teach us patience, mindfulness and become an enjoyable hobby to fall in love with.

So how can fountain pens teach us the art of mindfulness you ask? I’ll give you 3 key examples…

  1. Journaling + Setting an Intention

Journaling is a great way to stop, drop, and be mindful of what you are currently feeling and just let your words and thoughts flow onto the paper. It is extremely therapeutic and it’s like a breath of fresh air. When you journal you are subconsciously setting the intention of practicing mindfulness and bringing your awareness to your thoughts, how you feel and allowing yourself to process your emotions.

  2. Meditation + Focus

Most people think that meditation is sitting with your legs crossed and just breathing which couldn’t be farther from the truth. Meditation is anything that allows you to fall into the flow state and forget time and just allow yourself to simply let go and be. Writing can be cathartic as you watch the ink flow onto the paper (especially if you have great paper and a smooth writing experience). Focusing on your writing will help you to forget the past and future and bring your mind to the present moment.

3. Being Present

Mindfulness is all about being present and not thinking about the past or worrying about the future. It takes practice and patience but it is so worth the time and effort. Practicing your penmanship with a fountain pen is a great way to implement being present. It is a stress-free exercise that you can have total creative freedom with!

What's In My Art Journal Pouch | Delfonics Pouch

“No time like the present to really go inward and truly get in tune with yourself. Stop seeking external validation and unhealthy distractions. Instead of picking up your phone and mindlessly scrolling, pick up a new hobby, sit in silence and just be, read a new book, go for a walk, journal, draw (no matter how bad it may be), dance, etc. You have the power to change your habits and be more mindful of how you spend your time.” - Caroline Rogers

Small Delfonics Utility Pouch

This is my absolute favorite accessory to keep my supplies organized. It may look small but it packs a punch and holds a ton which you can see in the video above. It’s extremely versatile and you can use it for a multitude of uses.

Naomi Vandoren Pin

Naomi’s work is stunning and I have been a fan of hers for years now. When you go to her site, you are instantly transported to this fantasy world that is just so magical. When she launched this pin, I just had to have it! You can find her beautiful artwork here.

Micro Portable Painter (with Jane Davenport watercolors)

I wanted to have a mini palette that was able to hold some half pans while also being able to hold water and have a place for mixing colors. I was able to get this as a pre-order and it fits my needs perfectly. It is so compact and fits in this pouch perfectly. See in the video above how it comes together as a palette!

Pentel Aquash Water Brush in Medium

This brush is perfect for travel and on the go watercolor painting. All you have to do is fill the barrel with water and off you go!

Gold Skeleton Binder Clip

I love using these to clip onto my sketchbook to keep the pages open and flat so that I don’t have to worry about the wind blowing them around.

Clear Acrylic Block

I use this to put my clear stamps on to press them onto the paper.

Watercolor Swatches

One of my favorite things to do is to make swatch cards. Sometimes it’s hard to tell how a color will come out just by looking at it in the pan, so by having the swatch card you can tell the true color of it and see how opaque or transparent it is. You can also mix colors and see the different shades you can make!

Ephemera

I love having different bits of ephemera to put into my art journal to decorate my pages. It’s relaxing, brings the pages to life, and inspires me to write.

Canon Ivy in Mint + Canon Ivy Photo Paper

This is one of my favorite journaling supplies. I love putting pictures in my journal to look back on memories from different events and days that were special to me. All you have to do is peel off the sticker on the back and pop it right into your journal and it stays put!

Ranger Archival Ink in Jet Black

This ink is archival which makes it great for art journaling because you know it will last. I use this for my clear stamps and it has been my go-to for years.

Polaroid Photos

I do have a couple of polaroids I keep on hand but I prefer the Canon Ivy photos.

Vintage Stamps

When I was younger I used to collect vintage stamps. When I recently started getting into art journaling, I was so excited to find my old collection and finally be able to put them to use. I have been on a vintage kick lately.

Watercolor Rag

This is a must-have in my art kit. It is essential for when I have to wipe off my brush in order to change colors.

Washi Tape

I like to use washi tape to decorate my pages or to use it in my sketchbook to make a border around the edges so that after I paint I can peel it off so my painting is a clean square.

A6 Watercolor Sketchbook from Hahnemuhle

This sketchbook fits perfectly in the back pocket and is great for travel. The pages are thick and they work with watercolor beautifully.

Clear Stamps

My sister kindly gifted me these for my birthday one year and I love using them in my journal. They are so much fun to decorate my pages with!
